How Good Lighting Makes a Happy Home

Published by evershan at 1:12 am under Accessories Edit This

I managed to get a hold of some lovely lamps the other day and put them to good use - two next to the bed and one near the computer. It is amazing what a difference a warm glow of light makes on a room.

If you have been living with overhead lighting - or worse, like myself live in a condo that has NO overhead lighting, you may mistakenly believe you have done enough to serve your purposes. WRONG - Overhead lightings purpose is to illuminate the central area of the room. What you’re missing is the corners and edges of the room; a cosy reading light next to the arm chair, some lovely table lamps by the sofa, even a small accessory lamp on a hallway table or in a bathroom (in a saftey socket away from water, of course!).

If you have no overhead lighting you’ll probably get an uplight and table lamp and call it quits. Worse case scenario - you’ll leave your house wearing stains you didn’t see, or become as near sighted as a mole. On the other hand, hanging a few pendant lights in a group can be a dramatic way to add more light from above AND style. Task lighting is equally important here too - look for lamp shades in similar tones to keep it from looking cluttered.

Now that I’ve added a few more lights to the living room my home seems to glow with a new warmth. Dark, neglected areas are now cosy and welcoming. In the evening there are no bright overheads, but there is enough light to identify a piece of lint from a spider on the floor.

If lamps aren’t in the budget, and the kids are in bed, definitely go for some old-school candles for that added charm and ambience. It doesn’t matter if you’re watching TV or going through the bills, comfortable lighting imbues it’s calming effect and makes this moment just a little more wonderful to be at home.
